Yarrow

aka Common Yarrow
Achillea millefolium

Yarrow is a member of the Asteraceae family along with chamomile and chrysanthemums. It is commonly found along the North American coast in meadows, along roadsides, open spaces that are dry or moist and all elevations.  Western Europe herbalists believe that it facilitates healing by restraining the flow of blood to a wound. Achilliene (a sesquiterpene lactone) is the chemical compound in yarrow known for its healing power. Yarrow works by activating the blood platelets in the affected area. This helps facilitate blood coagulation, which lends to the rapid closing of the wound or stems minor internal bleeding; and form a protective layer against infection causing bacteria or helps protect the wound from infections. The plant itself and/or the essential oil is one of the most powerful antiseptics. It is a natural disinfectant. It contains antimicrobial properties. Yarrow also contain flavonoids that calm inflammation. There are many other uses for yarrow such as digestive issues, fever, UTI’s and immune support just to name a few. Twin Mountain Botanicals uses Yarrow tincture in its very popular BBG Skin Salve.
